The Cleveland Oktoberfest will host our second annual Wine and Food Pairing event in the Educational Building from 5PM-7PM on Saturday, Sept. 3rd. To guide you on your tour of German wines will be a representative of Heidelberg Distributing, noted for its fine German wines. Joining Heidelberg will be Oktoberfest's own Chef John Roberto, who will provide dishes to accompany each of the six featured German wines. Ever found yourself sniffing corks and swirling wine to impress a date, despite secretly not knowing what you were supposed to deduce from all the sniffing and swirling? Well, you will find this event enlightening, and really, regardless of what you know coming in, all should emerge with:
- A deepened appreciation for the rich variety of German wines
- Some knowledge of Germany's wine regions
- A connosieur's palette for appreciating the magical elixir that is wine
- Knowledge of how to pair food and wine based on their characteristic tastes and textures
SCHLOSS ZELL WINERY – MOSEL – SAAR – RUWER, GERMANY
SCHLOSS ZELL CONSENSUS RIESLING: Rheinhessen QbA. Subtle floral and green apple aroma, with honeyed green apple and lime flavors. Halbtrocken or ‘Half-dry’ (semi-sweet), and tart. Retail $8.99
PIESPORTER KABINETT (RIESLING): Kabinett wines are some of the most versatile in the world. Not too sweet and not too dry. Crisp light bodied wine reminiscent of granny smith apples. Lively acidity results in a juicy, clean palate feel.
DORNFELDER: Deep violet color and floral aroma. Velvety sweet texture, with flavors of exotic spice and berries. Germany’s hybrid red wine, comparable to a Beaujolais or Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir).
PIESPORTER SPATLESE (RIESLING): Well balanced late harvest Spätlese with classic Mosel characteristics of fresh acidity, ripe green apples and a clean, fresh finish.
PIESPORTER AUSLESE (RIESLING): Late harvest wine. Full bodied and rich, with mouth filling ripe apricot, pineapple and honey flavors. Good acid balance with a firm, lush, lingering finish.
TROCKENBEERENAUSLESE: TBA is the German designation for totally botrytis-affected wines. Similar in style to Bordeaux’s Sauternes.
